There are several types of hair loss, each with different causes, patterns and treatment approaches. The most common is androgenetic alopecia — male or female pattern hair loss caused by genetic and hormonal factors. Other types include temporary shedding, autoimmune-related loss and lifestyle-related loss.
Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)
The most common type of hair loss in men, affecting more than 50% of men over 50. Caused by the hormone DHT binding to hair follicles and causing them to miniaturise over time. Follows a predictable pattern classified by the Norwood Scale. Starts at the hairline, temples or crown and progresses from there. Read our full Male Pattern Baldness guide.
Female Pattern Hair Loss
Affects up to 40% of women by age 70. Presents as diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp rather than a receding hairline. Caused by genetic predisposition and hormonal factors, particularly around menopause. Classified using the Ludwig Scale. Read our Hair Loss in Women guide.
Alopecia Areata
An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing circular patches of hair loss on the scalp or body. Can affect men, women and children. May resolve without treatment in some cases. Hair transplant is not suitable during active alopecia areata. A GMC-registered specialist will advise at consultation.
Telogen Effluvium
Temporary, diffuse hair shedding triggered by a significant physical or emotional event such as illness, surgery, childbirth or extreme stress. Typically begins 2 to 3 months after the trigger event. Usually resolves within 6 to 9 months once the trigger is removed. No transplant needed — this type of hair loss is self-resolving in most cases.
Traction Alopecia
Hair loss caused by persistent tension on the hair follicles from tight hairstyles such as braids, extensions or ponytails. Most common in women and men who wear their hair in tight styles regularly. Caught early, it is reversible. At advanced stages, follicle damage may be permanent and transplant may be an option.
Treatment Options at Hair Growth Centre
Hair Growth Centre offers a range of treatment options for different types and stages of hair loss. The right option depends on the type of hair loss, the extent of progression, and your personal goals. A free consultation with a GMC-registered specialist will identify the most appropriate approach for you.
Hair Transplant
For patients with stable pattern hair loss and sufficient donor hair, FUE hair transplant is the most comprehensive option. Transplanted follicles grow naturally in their new position. Available for men and women. Find out more at /hair-transplants and /fue-hair-transplant.
Non-Surgical Treatments
For patients with early to moderate hair loss, or those who prefer a non-surgical approach, Hair Growth Centre offers Natural Hair Restoration and Low Level Laser Therapy. These treatments aim to slow hair loss progression and support natural regrowth. Find out more at /treatments.
Scalp Micropigmentation
For patients at any stage of hair loss who want an immediate cosmetic improvement, SMP creates the appearance of hair follicles on the scalp without surgery. Find out more at /scalp-micropigmentation.
When to Seek Treatment
The earlier hair loss is identified and assessed, the more options are available. Hair follicles that have been inactive for a long time are less likely to respond to non-surgical treatment, and very advanced hair loss may have limited donor supply for transplant. Acting earlier preserves more options.
If you have noticed your hair thinning, your hairline receding, or patches of hair loss appearing, a free consultation at Hair Growth Centre is the right first step. A GMC-registered specialist will diagnose the type and stage of your hair loss and explain all relevant treatment options with no obligation to proceed.
Not every patient needs treatment. Some types of hair loss are temporary and self-resolving. Some patients prefer to monitor progression before deciding. Hair Growth Centre will always give an honest assessment rather than pushing unnecessary treatment.
