Crown Hair Transplant UK: Restore Hair Density to the Top of Your Scalp

Recreate your natural whorl pattern and achieve seamless density at the vertex with specialist FUE surgery.

What Is Crown Hair Loss?

Crown hair loss refers to thinning or baldness at the top of the scalp, known as the vertex. It is one of the most common presentations of male pattern baldness, typically appearing at Norwood stage 3 vertex and progressing through stages 4, 5 and 6. Crown hair loss can also affect women experiencing female pattern hair loss.

The Vertex

The vertex is the circular area at the top of the scalp. It is often the last area to thin in men with androgenetic alopecia, but because it is highly visible from behind and above, patients are usually strongly motivated to treat it.

Norwood Scale

Noticeable from Norwood stage 3V onwards. Stages 3V to 5 are typically the most suitable for transplant. See our Norwood Scale guide for more information.

Progression

Crown hair loss often progresses gradually over years. A consultation with a GMC-registered surgeon ensures your ongoing hair loss rate is factored into the treatment plan.

Crown Hair Transplant Using FUE

Hair Growth Centre uses FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) to treat crown hair loss. Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp and implanted precisely into the thinning or bald crown area to restore natural-looking density.

How FUE Treats Crown Hair Loss

The crown area requires careful attention to graft angle and direction. Hair on the crown grows in a circular or spiral pattern that must be replicated during implantation for the result to look natural. Our GMC-registered surgeons have extensive experience in mapping and recreating the natural crown whorl pattern.

Unshaven FUE for Crown Restoration

Hair Growth Centre offers Unshaven FUE for crown restoration. The procedure can be performed through existing hair without shaving, making it suitable for patients who want to maintain their appearance during the process. This is one of the few UK clinics offering this for crown procedures.

How Many Grafts Does a Crown Transplant Need?

The number of grafts required depends on the size of the crown area and the degree of hair loss.

Norwood StageEstimated Graft Count
Norwood 3 Vertex800 to 1,200 grafts
Norwood 41,200 to 1,800 grafts
Norwood 51,800 to 2,500 grafts
Norwood 62,500 to 3,500 grafts
(combined crown and mid-scalp)

These are estimates only. Exact graft count is confirmed at your free consultation.

Am I a Suitable Candidate?

Crown hair transplant works best when the hair loss is stable and there is sufficient donor hair available. A free consultation with one of our GMC-registered surgeons is the best way to confirm suitability.

Best Candidates

  • Patients at Norwood stages 3 vertex to 5 with stable hair loss.
  • Sufficient donor hair density at the back and sides of the scalp.
  • Patients who understand that ongoing hair loss may require additional treatment in the future.
  • Both men and women are suitable.

When It May Not Be Right

  • Advanced Norwood 6 or 7 where donor supply is limited.
  • Patients with active, rapidly progressing hair loss.
  • Alopecia areata or hair loss caused by medical conditions.
  • Your surgeon will advise honestly at consultation.

The Crown Hair Transplant Procedure

A crown hair transplant at Hair Growth Centre is performed under local anaesthetic and typically takes between 5 and 8 hours depending on the number of grafts required.

01

Consultation and Assessment

Your surgeon assesses the extent of your crown hair loss, your donor hair density, and your goals. The graft count and likely outcome are discussed honestly at this stage.

02

Hairline and Crown Design

On the day of treatment, your surgeon maps the crown area and plans the graft distribution to recreate the natural whorl pattern of crown hair growth.

03

Graft Extraction

Hair follicles are extracted using a precision punch tool. The extraction is planned to preserve the donor area for any future procedures that may be needed.

04

Graft Implantation to Crown Area

Grafts are implanted into the crown area at the precise angle and direction required to match the natural crown whorl. This stage requires the most skill.

05

Aftercare and Recovery

You go home the same day. Full aftercare instructions are provided. Follow-up appointments are included. New growth typically begins at 3 to 4 months.

Recovery After Crown Hair Transplant

Recovery after a crown hair transplant follows the same timeline as other FUE procedures. The crown area heals well and most patients find the process straightforward.

Days 1 to 7

Initial Healing

Mild redness and small scabs. Return to desk work within 3 to 5 days. Avoid pressure on the crown area.

Weeks 2 to 6

Shock Loss Phase

Transplanted hairs shed. This is normal and expected. The follicles remain intact and will produce new growth.

Months 3 to 4

New Growth Begins

New hair growth begins from the transplanted follicles in the crown area. Fine at first, thickening gradually.

Months 6 to 12

Full Density Develops

The majority of crown density develops. Crown growth can sometimes take slightly longer than hairline growth.
